During the course of the story, Griffin demonstrates a tyrannical personality in which he views [[Konoko]] as an asset, so long as she can be controlled.  However, he was easily willing to attempt termination of her, as well as use her best friend [[Shinatama]] in a defensive matrix as a means to try and kill her.  He generally is shown using various people as tools and weapons, and seems a perfect counterpart to [[Muro]] in the syndicate.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The odd characteristic that remains uncertain though, is why, assuming [[Mai]] chose to spare his life, did he manage to drop in to battle [[Muro &amp;amp; Friends]] with a TCTF strike team?  Did he feel that he owed [[Konoko]] a debt for sparing his life?  Did he feel a change of heart?  He addresses Muro in one version of the final battle with the fact that [[Konoko]] is not alone.  He engages in the battle, though his fate following the final battle is unknown.&lt;br /&gt;

Whatever he initially wanted with her, the only ingame episode featured in {{C7}}, as [[Konoko|Mai]] infiltrates the complex, is that of Shinatama&#039;s torture : Muro lets high voltage electricity from one of the [[ACC]]&#039;s generators through Shinatama&#039;s body, amused at the extent to which [[Shinatama]] feels pain. Muro is assisted by a [[comguy]], but there is no mention made of Muro retrieving any information (e.g. about Mai&#039;s [[Daodan]] symbiosis), either downloading it from Shinatama&#039;s memory banks or extracting it verbally.&lt;br /&gt;

Muro scorns at [[Mai]] for forgiving the man who used her, and also that she would be willing to fight for the inferior race (those not enhanced by the Daodan Chrysalis).  Muro offers [[Mai]] to join him, stating that a better prospect lies with him.  [[Mai]] refuses, and a grand battle occurs between the two teams.&lt;br /&gt;

Assuming that Mai chose to kill Griffin, Muro evolved into a towering muscular, horned form, upon the arrival of Mai in the final battle.  In his enormous form, he was protected by his own equivalent of a [[force shield]] most of the time, and could also reach out over great distances with bolts of energy at his foes.  His powers seemed to combine the attributes of both [[Mukade]] and [[Barabas]] being able to drain energy and heal, as well as slam the ground to generate shockwaves, and possessed horns from his head as well as spikes coming from his back. Muro&#039;s mutant form was enormous and heavy, possibly weighing an excess of one ton, and standing more than 3 meters in height.  In this battle, he would fight [[Mai]] alone, in a one-on-one battle.&lt;br /&gt;

So, while Muro is best viewed as an embodiment of Mai&#039;s violent side, he&#039;s a bit more than that, technicaly.&lt;br /&gt;

It has been pointed out that Mutant Muro might be, at least in part, a hallucination brought about by [[Mai]]&#039;s cold-blooded murder of [[Griffin]].&lt;br /&gt;

Such a [[Daodan]]-driven hallucination effect can be put in parallel with the [[rooftops]] episode (hunting and killing [[Mukade]]) in two respects.&lt;br /&gt;

At that moment, Mai has to deal with primal, violent instincts. Her mind is set on hunting, chasing, tracking, killing the one who stole her memories. This &amp;quot;predator&#039;s craze&amp;quot; can lead to hallucinations (illusions of telepathy, or enhancement/alteration of actual connection), and the Daodan only enhances it.&lt;br /&gt;

In the sense of timing, Mai had a greater period of time collecting the information, because Griffin was killed and otherwise would have provided some assistance in getting Mai to her drop zone in the Syndicate Base, having an estimate already of the location of the base from the tracking of Muro&#039;s aircraft.  Griffin would also have been bringing his own strike force to assist Mai on the rooftop, as the alternate final battle in which Griffin was spared does show this.  However, during the extra time for Mai to jack the data and the aircraft, Muro performed whatever tasks were neccessary, possibly self-inflicted trauma, to stimulate his final mutation upon Mai&#039;s arrival.&lt;br /&gt;

Barabas was primarily a street thug, and quite possibly an early Syndicate prototype involving the Daodan Chrysalis assigned for work as a professional thug by [[Muro]] for the [[Syndicate]].  His two encounters with Konoko (Mai) occurred during the start of her mission to the lab, followed by his assignment to break into TCTF headquarters and take Konoko&#039;s SLD, [[Shinatama]], from her station.  After dropping off [[Shinatama]] in a helicopter, he stayed behind to personally settle his score with Konoko.  There, on the rooftops of [[TCTF Regional HQ]], he met a defeat when squaring off with Konoko.  He was presumably killed or captured in the aftermath of that fight.&lt;br /&gt;

He&#039;s the main bad guy in [[wikipedia:The_Little_Gold_Key_or_the_Adventures_of_Buratino|Zolotoi Klyuchik a.k.a. the adventures of Buratino]], the Russian remake of Collodi&#039;s [[wikipedia:Pinocchio|Pinocchio]].&lt;br /&gt;

Karabas-Barabas is a puppet master. The puppets of his theater are alive, so he doesn&#039;t actually animate them with strings : it&#039;s more like he&#039;s a tyrant and they are his slaves. The protagonist, Buratino the puppet, finds a golden key that unlocks the door to a hidden, &amp;quot;parallel&amp;quot;, much better world, helps the other puppets to run away from Karabas Barabas&#039;s theater, and eventually leads them to that other world (narrowly escaping Karabas&#039;s pursuit) where they live happily ever after.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Karabas-Barabas&#039;s appearance is close to that of an ogre : he&#039;s a giant with a very long black beard. His disrespect of puppet life (he wants to throw Buratino into the fire as fuel) enhances this aspect. In that he&#039;s close to the Buddhist [[Oni]] which are somewhere in between ogres and imps.&lt;br /&gt;

The book itself (and the movies) are morally lighter than Collodi&#039;s original, being aimed at young children. Since the book and movies were produced during the Soviet era, they could have ended up ideologically heavy. Of course the tyrannic Karabas-Barabas can be seen as the embodiment of capitalism, and his puppets can represent the working class, but on the whole it&#039;s just a regular (quite entertaining) story for children. Big bad guy, little good guys, domination of evil, escape, happily ever after.&lt;br /&gt;

Jesus Christ was referring to God as &amp;quot;Abba&amp;quot; when preaching (in Aramaic). So basically the Jewish crowd had to choose between two guys who bore exactly the same name &amp;quot;Jesus, son of the Father&amp;quot;... however, one of them was a preacher and was called Christ, and the other one was an insurrectionist (i.e. someone who physically opposed the Roman Empire) and was not called Christ. Jesus the rioter was released, and Jesus the preacher was crucified, by public request.&lt;br /&gt;

====Barabbas as Jesus&#039;s alter ego====&lt;br /&gt;
It seems as if Jesus and Barabbas were actually two sides of the same person. The spiritual leader, who preaches new (mostly non-aggressive) beliefs and wants the Jewish people to achieve a kind of &#039;&#039;moral&#039;&#039; freedom, is opposed to the insurrectionnist, i.e. one who&#039;d actually get involved in the &#039;&#039;physical&#039;&#039; liberation of the Jewish people. That &#039;&#039;physical&#039;&#039; &amp;quot;son of God&amp;quot; is what Jesus could have been in the eyes of the Jews, and he was often blamed (by the Jewish people &#039;&#039;and&#039;&#039; by his disciples) for not taking actual &#039;&#039;action&#039;&#039; against the Empire. Jesus&#039;s line aroused misunderstanding and frustation even among his most fervent followers (Peter, Judas), and made it easy for the High Priests to manipulate the crowd into rejecting their Messiah (since they weren&#039;t exactly happy with him in the first place).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So the episode with Barabbas can just be a parable for the public&#039;s rejection of Jesus&#039;s pacifism. The story makes it look like the crowd actually made the Romans free one man (a rioter) and crucify another one (a preacher), but it can be seen as if there was a &#039;&#039;hypothetical&#039;&#039;, &#039;&#039;rioting&#039;&#039; &amp;quot;Jesus son of God&amp;quot; they &#039;&#039;would&#039;&#039; have freed and followed, and the &#039;&#039;actual&#039;&#039;, &#039;&#039;preaching&#039;&#039; &amp;quot;Jesus son of God&amp;quot; they had had enough of and chose to crucify...&lt;br /&gt;

This episode about &amp;quot;state mercy&amp;quot; on the day of Passover sounds more like a choice offered &#039;&#039;by&#039;&#039; the crowd &#039;&#039;to&#039;&#039; Jesus :&lt;br /&gt;

Let&#039;s assume for a moment that Barabas&#039;s Daodan is somehow prevented from invading all of his organism (regular injections of medecine, invasive surgery, physical isolation of a fully human brain from a Daodan-enhanced body, synthetic organs that the Daodan biomass can&#039;t replace...). What then?&lt;br /&gt;
====Insufficient optimization====&lt;br /&gt;
Barabas is physically weaker than Mutant Muro because his bones and muscles (and brain!) don&#039;t form one hyper-evolved whole. He lacks Mai&#039;s and Muro&#039;s agility and reflexes, because the (say, electronic) interface between the human brain and the hyper-evolved biomass can&#039;t keep up with the stream of information it has to convey. Heck, maybe the human brain&#039;s reflexes are not as sharp as those of a brain that has undergone integration... maybe they&#039;re &#039;&#039;unadapted&#039;&#039; to the way the biomass has evolved, or at least far from optimal.&lt;br /&gt;
====Incomplete integrity====&lt;br /&gt;
All this because the Daodan process did not go to completion : the human brain that&#039;s &amp;quot;in control&amp;quot; &#039;&#039;does not form a whole&#039;&#039; with the hyperevolved body. A Daodan&#039;s cells are totipotent, and a Daodan&#039;s brain is supposed to merge with the rest of the organism, to extend into it much deeper than a human nervous system does. One aspect of the Daodan process is the fast regeneration and inter-replaceability of any kind of tissue (the Daodan biomass is actually one such &amp;quot;metatissue&amp;quot; that can serve as any organ on demand). In parallel, there&#039;s a &#039;&#039;delocalization&#039;&#039; of intelligence and reflexes. So a complete merging seems necessary for a truly effective and efficient symbiosis.&lt;br /&gt;
====Paradigm of controlled technology====&lt;br /&gt;
Just as in the biblical case up there, the desire of &#039;&#039;pure physical power without an associated spiritual alienation&#039;&#039;, although symbolic of the nature of man and society, is not necessarily a viable alternative. There&#039;s a whole dimension of Daodan symbiosis which this approach leaves out. So Barabas is another delusion, another failure. It highlights the limitations of the paradigm of &amp;quot;controlled technology&amp;quot;. You discover something which consequences go way beyond your perspective and scope and influence, so you try your best to regulate/limit that technology, achieving some form of control and preventing too radical a change in global policy, way of life, whatever.&lt;br /&gt;

Well, that&#039;s very tricky. Power &#039;&#039;does&#039;&#039; alienate. And &#039;&#039;great&#039;&#039; power alienates &#039;&#039;greatly&#039;&#039;. Especially when the source of power, the breakthrough that generates it, has to do with the human being itself. Alienation of both man and society is at its most literal then.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Cyborgization, Daodan... that&#039;s fiction. But what consequences should &#039;&#039;we&#039;&#039; expect in &#039;&#039;our&#039;&#039; world from a major breakthrough in health care or genetic engineering? The question is wide open...&lt;br /&gt;

It has been pointed out that Mutant Muro might be, at least in part, a hallucination brought about by [[Mai]]&#039;s cold-blooded murder of [[Griffin]].&lt;br /&gt;

Such a [[Daodan]]-driven hallucination effect can be put in parallel with the [[rooftops]] episode (hunting and killing [[Mukade]]) in two respects.&lt;br /&gt;
#The way Mai feels [[Mukade]] may have an underlying physical reality (telepathy, pheromones), but it may also be a psychological effect. At that moment, Mai has to deal with primal, violent instincts. Her mind is set on hunting, chasing, tracking, killing the one who stole her memories. This &amp;quot;predator&#039;s craze&amp;quot; can lead to hallucinations (illusions of telepathy, or enhancement/alteration of actual connection), and the Daodan only enhances it.&lt;br /&gt;
#When Mai (cold-bloodedly?) kills [[Mukade]], she denies the violent side of her (which Mukade claims is slated to take control of her). This feeds back onto her psychology, so she&#039;s less of a killer afterwards... then [[Kerr]]&#039;s death and [[Shinatama]]&#039;s zombification (and second death) set Mai&#039;s mind on murder again. If she kills Griffin in cold blood, the killer in her wakes up again, and comes back in the shape of Mutant Muro.&lt;br /&gt;

Thus the choice Mai faces in the [[Omega bunker]] is her chance to confirm or withdraw the point she made when killing Mukade and denying her violent side. This leaves two open issues:&lt;br /&gt;
#The &amp;quot;right&amp;quot; choice seems to be not to kill Griffin, but doesn&#039;t it leave room for further temptation? What will become of Mai if she fails to contain her in a future, similar situation?&lt;br /&gt;

An alternative logical explanation would suggest that timing may have played a part in the formation of mutant Muro rather than his traditional form.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In the sense of timing, Mai had a greater period of time collecting the information, because Griffin was killed and otherwise would have provided some assistance in getting Mai to her drop zone in the Syndicate Base, having an estimate already of the location of the base from the tracking of Muro&#039;s aircraft.  Griffin would also have been bringing his own strike force to assist Mai on the rooftop, as the alternate final battle in which Griffin was spared does show this.  However, during the extra time for Mai to jack the data and the aircraft, Muro performed whatever tasks were neccessary, possibly self-inflicted trauma, to stimulate his final mutation upon Mai&#039;s arrival.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Muro may very well have literally have transformed, as elements of his transformation are shown in the cases of [[Mukade]] and [[Barabas]].  Barabas possessing the horned head and significantly tall stature, while Mukade demonstrated lightning-fast strikes and seemingly red aura of energy about him.  Muro, however, evolved in this &amp;quot;extra time&amp;quot; to greater power that easily combined the two aforementioned attributes, supposedly demonstrating the &amp;quot;ultimate state&amp;quot; in evolution from the Daodan Chrysalis.&lt;br /&gt;

Such a [[Daodan]]-driven hallucination effect can be put in parallel with the [[rooftops]] episode (hunting and killing [[Mukade]]) in two respects.&lt;br /&gt;
#The way Mai feels [[Mukade]] may have an underlying physical reality (telepathy, pheromones), but it may also be a psychological effect. At that moment, Mai has to deal with primal, violent instincts. Her mind is set on hunting, chasing, tracking, killing the one who stole her memories. This &amp;quot;predator&#039;s craze&amp;quot; can lead to hallucinations (illusions of telepathy, or enhancement/alteration of actual connection), and the Daodan only enhances it.&lt;br /&gt;
#When Mai (cold-bloodedly?) kills [[Mukade]], she denies the violent side of her (which Mukade claims is slated to take control of her). This feeds back onto her psychology, so she&#039;s less of a killer afterwards... then [[Kerr]]&#039;s death and [[Shinatama]]&#039;s zombification (and second death) set Mai&#039;s mind on murder again. If she kills Griffin in cold blood, the killer in her wakes up again, and comes back in the shape of Mutant Muro.&lt;br /&gt;

Thus the choice Mai faces in the [[Omega bunker]] is her chance to confirm or withdraw the point she made when killing Mukade and denying her violent side. This leaves two open issues:&lt;br /&gt;
#The &amp;quot;right&amp;quot; choice seems to be not to kill Griffin, but doesn&#039;t it leave room for further temptation? What will become of Mai if she fails to contain her in a future, similar situation?&lt;br /&gt;
#The &amp;quot;wrong&amp;quot; choice alienates Mai deeply, but is that alienation irreversible? Does Mai redeem herself by defeating Mutant Muro (sort of like for Mukade), or is it too late for her to be &amp;quot;saved&amp;quot;? Is she condemned to be haunted by real and unreal violence forever? In her dreams, perhaps?&lt;br /&gt;

== Alternative Explanations ==&lt;br /&gt;

An alternative logical explanation would suggest that either moral relativism or timing may have played a part in the formation of mutant Muro rather than his traditional form.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In the sense of timing, Mai had a greater period of time collecting the information, because Griffin was killed and otherwise would have provided some assistance in getting Mai to her drop zone in the Syndicate Base, having an estimate already of the location of the base from the tracking of Muro&#039;s aircraft.  Griffin would also have been bringing his own strike force to assist Mai on the rooftop, as the alternate final battle in which Griffin was spared does show this.  However, during the extra time for Mai to jack the data and the aircraft, Muro performed whatever tasks were neccessary, possibly self-inflicted trauma, to stimulate his final mutation upon Mai&#039;s arrival.&lt;br /&gt;
