(I think we all need to chill out tonight, so writing a calm little blurb to direct users to Wikipeda; it's better than a coldly tossed-out link; now to go make some tea)

However, why should we go to the trouble of writing that up for you when helpful Wikipedia people have already done it?

Bear in mind that the style guides and procedures that Wikipedia follows are too bureaucratic for our tastes, but everything else is pretty relevant to how we run things here because their wiki and ours run off the same software, MediaWiki.
 
So sit back with a cup of tea and read over their work; even if you're not totally new to wikis, you're sure to learn something.
