This proposed box art or placeholder image appeared on the Amazon listing for Oni around Nov. 5, 2000, over two months before Oni's release, though it was quickly followed on Nov. 10 by [[:Image:Early box art2.jpg|this second one]]. This seemingly-official cover was the first image associated with the Amazon listing for Oni, appearing around Nov. 5, 2000, though it was quickly followed on Nov. 10 by this second one. While very different from the final box art, it uses the same Matrix-style streamers of 0s and 1s. The 3D-modeled character depicted in this image is rather mysterious and does not seem to resemble either Konoko's in-game model or her 1998 trailer model. Even Bungie staff were baffled by the image's origin.

After appearing on Amazon for a few days in 2000, the Oni kanji with the woman inside was not seen again until the 2019 re-discovery of the Taiwanese release of Oni by King Interactive Multimedia, which uses it on both the front and back of the box.
