Ian Patterson began developing OniTools in 2000 based on his reverse-engineering of Oni's demo, making it the first modding tool for Oni. The first release for which we can find evidence was [https://web.archive.org/web/20010123220300/http://oni.bungie.org/res/utilities.html#onitools v0.6] on January 20, 2001, but there were mentions of OniTools releases as early as [https://carnage.bungie.org/oniforum/oni.forum.pl?read=9992 January 2, 2001], 27 days before Oni's retail release.
By releasing the source code for OniTools along with the application, Patterson shared his knowledge of the game data so others could build on it. Although OniTools was a crucial part of the early [[history of Oni modding]], it is now superseded by [[OniSplit]] and accompanying GUIs such as [[Vago]].
