It's difficult to say whether this is authentic early box art or a fan-made mock-up, but it's interesting to note that this image came out before Oni did, and that it uses the same exact Matrix-style streamers of 0s and 1s that are seen in this retail box cover. Also, it appeared as a box image on the pre-release Oni product page, and customer images could not be uploaded to Amazon until 2004. In any case, the 3D model depicted in this image is rather mysterious and does not seem to resemble any Konoko models, such as the in-game model or the 1998 trailer model. Color filter notwithstanding, the woman appears to some observers to have blonde hair.
This proposed box art or placeholder image appeared on the Amazon listing for Oni around Nov. 5, 2000, over two months before Oni's release, though it was quickly followed on Nov. 10 by this second one. While very different from the final box art, it uses the same Matrix-style streamers of 0s and 1s. The 3D-modeled character depicted in this image is rather mysterious and does not seem to resemble any Konoko models, such as the in-game model or the 1998 trailer model. Color filter notwithstanding, the woman appears to some observers to have blonde hair.

This early notion of box art was quickly followed by this second one.
After being taken down from Amazon after a few days back in 2000, this variant of the Oni kanji with the woman inside was not observed again until the discovery of the King Interactive Multimedia release of Oni in Taiwan, which uses it on both the front and back of the box.
