Analysis
The music underneath the animated sequence is titled "Farewell" on the soundtrack CD and is composed by Marty O'Donnell. After the animation, the credits start rolling to the sounds of Power of Seven's "Trailer", blending into another version of "Farewell" and finally ending with a bonus track which plays this groove underneath varied character soundbites. (Note that this is a description of the Windows/Mac audio for the credits, but the PS2 version has its own credits music.)
Below are a few representative frames of Oni's outro sequence, animated by AIC. The soundtrack appears on the promotional CD as "Farewell", not clearly credited to Salvatori or O'Donnell or whoever. Samples of this theme are played in 8 during the talk with Shinatama and in 11 while Mai reads Hasegawa's diary. After the sequence, the credits start rolling to the sounds of Power of Seven's Trailer, blending into another version of "Farewell".

There are details on every image's page, but they are not interlinked yet. Since the BINK video was lossy, it may be a good idea to re-extract these as JPG. The top and bottom mattes were cut completely, while some of the side mattes was preserved. The size is now 504x288, so recommended thumb sizes are 252, 168, 126, 84, etc.

There is already a fair amount written here about the questionable wisdom of Mai's rash actions in 'blowing the processors'. Was the "horrible cost" of so many dying avoidable? While she could have tried to defeat Muro first and then taken the time to reverse his scheme before it was implemented, how could she know if she would survive a fight with Muro? Perhaps the only choice she could make (acting alone, after all, with no one to sound her ideas against) was to take immediate action while she had the chance, rather than retreat and come back later. With the TCTF as her enemy, she would not be able to assemble any support for a raid, and thus may have figured that this might be her only chance.

In the epilogue, Mai notes two large changes in society that are taking place: dealing openly with the situation of the poisoned planet, and, most intriguingly, the Chrysalis 'changing us all'. It may be necessary for everyone to have a Chrysalis to adapt to the pollution. But how can this be done? Is there time and money for every man, woman and child to get their own Chrysalis? Can they be cloned generically from a host like Mai? Who will get them first? Will everyone be subject to Daodan spikes, and even Imago transformations? Where will this lead civilization? Those are the sorts of unsettling issues that Oni leaves us to ponder, with no easy answers.

For a consideration of the events of the Cataclysm, see 12/3. For speculation on the aftermath, see Oni2:Aftermath. For a transcription of the credits in the outro, see Credits. For the intro sequence, see Intro.

The outro movie to the game plays whenever CHAPTER 14 . DAWN OF THE CHRYSALIS is beaten, unless you rename/remove the file outro.bik from the GameDataFolder. The movie consists of a 30-second epilogue to the story followed by a few minutes of credits. The final text displayed after the credits is a notification that cheats have been unlocked, and the player is informed of the "shapeshifter" cheat code. After the outro finishes playing, the game quits.

Below are some representative frames of the outro's animation, created by anime studio AIC (sadly now defunct). There are details on the page of every image below, but the pages are not interlinked. Click here to watch the video on YouTube.

When I blew the processors I bought us some time, but at a horrible cost. The dead and the dying now line the streets but it is impossible to deny the problem any longer. My father's work may prove to be the salvation of the afflicted after all. Mankind as we knew it is doomed: the Chrysalis will change us all. Let's hope it's for the better.
