This proposed box art or placeholder image appeared on the Amazon listing for Oni around Nov. 5, 2000, over two months before Oni's release, though it was quickly followed on Nov. 10 by this second one. While very different from the final box art, it uses the same Matrix-style streamers of 0s and 1s. The 3D-modeled character depicted in this image is rather mysterious and does not seem to resemble either Konoko's in-game model or her 1998 trailer model. Color filter notwithstanding, the woman appears to some observers to have blonde hair. Even Bungie was baffled by the image's origin.

After being taken down from Amazon after a few days back in 2000, this variant of the Oni kanji with the woman inside was not observed again until the discovery of the King Interactive Multimedia release of Oni in Taiwan, which uses it on both the front and back of the box.
