The Daodan's ability to produce non-random mutations doesn't exist in nature. So, its purposefulness should be the result of something man-made, probably some kind of computer. So far I have had doubts that a computer could be produced inside a living system. Certainly, it wouldn't be a computer that has today's dimensions, materials or architecture.
The Daodan's ability to produce non-random mutations doesn't exist in nature. So, its purposefulness should be the result of something man-made, probably some kind of computer. So far I have had doubts that a computer could be produced inside a living system (2008?) but time has past now I'm quite confident (2016). Certainly, it wouldn't be a computer that has today's dimensions, materials or architecture.

But technological progress goes on and on. Nanotechnology is part of the party. It leads to further minimization of technology, brings new materials, and kicks the door to quantum mechanics wide open.
The ongoing miniaturization alone is just amazing: logic gates that range from cells, to macromolecules like DNA, up to groups of only a few molecules

Ideas and prototypes of unconventional computers are in development. The size of their logic gates range from cells, to macromolecules like DNA, up to groups of only a few molecules. Duroquinone is an example of the latter. In groups of 17 molecules, duroquinone is allegedly capable of parallel computing. According to a BBC article, that "nano brain" sounds more like it's a signal hub. Another team later designed a molecule that seems more promising.
Nowadays synthetic biology can create new gene circuits and logic gates and memory inside living cells.

In 2013 scientists succeeded in combining logic gates and memory inside bacteria.
Looking at this progress the remaining problem seems to be sensing the full spectrum of stimuli feeding the self-improving models.

Electricity can be harnessed from charged clouds, with or without lightning. Or simply from the ground (Bioc power grid).

Biology made from condensed matter?
Possibilities of synthetic biology can be extended by XNA, adding new nucleic acids to the "alphabet".
Now, what would happen if you even learn how to use even more isotopes and stick only to atoms and molecules that can be condensed?
Pokemon! I always wondered how do these animals fit into such tiny space? Answer: the ball contains pools for fermionic condensates and a memory for the genetic and anatomic blueprints. Of course you need a techno sphere (gaia or whatever) to reach ultra cool temperatures, do fast scans and later on the printing.

Instant energy transport
In quantum mechanics they say, when you measure the state one one entangled particle you force the corresponding (e.g. spin) state on the other partner particle. Since the distance between these partners don't seem to play any role, couldn't you transport energy from one position to another? Entanglement is very fragile so you need some kind "entanglement regeneration". So far there's only rubbish on the internet concerning "entanglement regeneration" but I believe that one day even that is possible. [...]
Another crazy addition to this is the usage of particles from stars because they constantly change states. Their partners are carried in BECs. (Certain merged fermions (matter particle) behave like bosons.)
For robustness, the entanglement exist between cluster rather than single particle. Yorick switches off Möbius' safty protocol. He scarifies the regeneration for a short, full energy output.
This technology is reserved for Nature's Decision.
Story fragment from boss battle - Yorick vs. Memhunter.

The most strange thing about Oni's plasma rifle was that the bolt accelerates over distance.

Let's compare this to a full-blown balloon losing air. But here it is graphene-coated bubble that is self propelling due to a plasma jet at a a hole, collapsing at contact. The bubble is magnetized causing electrons to be attracted and fueling a contraction mechanism. The positive charged protons are repelled and can only escape through the only opening.

The "fun" thing is that these coated plasma bolts should do various kinds of damage: shock, burn, and impact.
