"Black-eyed teeth" is a riddle made up by geyser after listening to Drifting by Recoil.
- Unless mentioned otherwise, I=me=geyser in the stuff below.
- Please use the talk page for guesses etc.
The Riddle
Disclaimer
- Many riddles force people to think or speak of familiar things in rather unconventional ways.
- There are unfair/unsolvable riddles, from elephant jokes to What has it got in its pocketses?
- Even in the case of fair riddles, the fairness is usually the result of some sort of convention.
- In that sense, I can not guarantee that the riddle I pose is fair. At least not on my own.
- For my part, I took it as an actual, fair riddle while I was the one solving it... of course.
- Then one day the answer dawned upon me, and I took the solution as fair enough.
- (a friend was around at that very moment and acknowledged the solution)
- Then I offered it to Guido as a mere "twisted mind synchronization test".
- Finally, I became confident in the riddle's fairness and spread it around.
- So far, only a couple of people came up with the answer: my sister and Guido :)
- My sister thought the riddle was reasonably fair, and Guido basically didn't :)
- I am currently revising this page so as to disambiguate as much as possible.
Drifting
- I came across Drifting on YouTube after becoming aware of Recoil (thanks to Neo).
- It is the first single from Recoil's album Unsound Methods and it has an official video.
- Music video
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8craU6d5bc
- (this uses the shorter Radio Edit version)
- Lyrics
- http://www.rogerwatersonline.com/Artists_r/recoil_lyrics/drifting.html
- (those are for the longer album version)
- Note
- Although I liked the video very much, it has nothing to do with the Riddle.
- Just like the music, it has had no other function than to convey the Words.
- Also note
- The riddle is enclosed in a longer phrase in the song's actual lyrics:
- "with your wild, with your sweet, with your cold, black-eyed teeth"
- (or maybe just the shorter phrase "with your cold, black-eyed teeth")
- I decided to reduce the riddle to the key terms "black-eyed teeth".
- I might have complemented them with a few extra words, but didn't.
- Instead I chose to provide additional hints as detailed below.
Hints
- My first hint is...
- an elephant! :)
- Another big hint
- It's a crucial element of Western culture ^_^
- "Random" music videos etc
Those are just things off the top of my (geyser's) head
- which feature the answer in some way or other.
- More or less deliberately misleading...
- Bossa Nova by Shivaree
- I Don't Feel like Dancin' by the Scissor Sisters
- Clubbed to Death by Rob Dougan
- Biomega by Tsutomu Nihei
The answer is featured rather prominently in all those.
- However, be sure not to be overwhelmed by the input.
Try not to overlook/forget the actual info provided by me.
- Intense audio/video hints are easily misleading. Heh.
Anti-hints
- "Random" music videos etc
Those are things off the top of my (geyser's) head
- which do not feature the answer in any way
- (as far as I (geyser) can tell).
- What's up, people?! by Maximum the Hormone
I Don't Feel like Dancin'
This song features multiple more or less direct references to the riddle's solution, intertwined with the song/video's own trivia.
- Notably, the solution is explicitly named in this song's lyrics and appears several times in the video (see link above).
