Dr. Hasegawa, also known as Prof. Hasegawa (first name unknown), is the father of Mai Hasegawa. Very little is explained in-game about Hasegawa as a character, though it is his actions which trigger the events of Oni.

Facts

Hasegawa was a professor of an unknown subject at a university, presumably in Japan, and fell in love with one of his students, Jamie Kerr. Jamie is Dr. Kerr's sister, leading to Hasegawa's acquaintance with the doctor. Hasegawa and Jamie had two children, Mai and Muro.

Jamie convinced Hasegawa that the WCG was hiding something concerning the nature of the BioCrisis. Jamie also participated in open protests against the coverup. In an act of defiance against the WCG and a quest for scientific knowledge, Jamie and Hasegawa entered a so-called "Wilderness Preserve", where Jamie received a scratch that immediately turned into a major infection, causing her great pain. The only thing Hasegawa could do was "ease her pain"; a newspaper article with the headline "Grad Student Dies: Murder or Mercy" tells us that Hasegawa killed Jamie.

Afterward, Dr. Kerr reveals that he and Hasegawa worked on the Daodan project together, but were separated during a Syndicate raid on their lab. Kerr fled to the TCTF with Mai, but Hasegawa was held by the Syndicate along with Muro. Hasegawa's final fate remains unclear, but after obtaining the disc with her biographical records, Konoko seems to believe he is dead judging from her dialogue in the intro to Chapter 11.

Added value

  • Hasegawa's first name is not given in any final game material. A bio created for an earlier version of the story gives his name as Kenichi, however in that story the mother's name is Barbara not Jamie, the Hasegawas are Konoko's adoptive parents, and Konoko enters the police force at 18, so the first name not to be considered canonical.
  • A larger version of the "Murder or Mercy" article with readable text was found on Bungie's site, and the text not visible in the image was speculatively reconstructed HERE.
