Nostalgia-ridden Iritscen randomly decides to check out Oni one day, after getting back into Marathon and discovering the whole AlephOne deal has been going on for a decade without his knowing. He finds a community of enthusiastic people has reverse-engineered massive amounts of the game despite lacking any assistance from Bungie, etc. Seeing their valiant efforts, such as preparing to release a Seventh Anniversary Edition mod package that improves gameplay, he eagerly jumps in, trying to help while not exactly knowing what in the heck he's doing. This is his story.

I am user #41 on the wiki and my edit count as of July '08 is 1,675 (sad, isn't it?)

Life of Iritscen
Starting in the 2nd week of June, going through maybe the 1st week of July, I will be in transition to a new life in a new state, under a new name. Just kidding about the last part. But this means that I will probably be unable to visit the forums at all during that time. I will still try to check the wiki occasionally, so if anyone needs me (hah!) my Talk page is the place to let me know. Also, I will continue to work on the Oni projects mentioned below during this time period, assuming being off the Net doesn't hamper that work.

Update: Well, I'm back! I underestimated how time-consuming it is to move. I am still working through the process of furnishing my new place, but I am beginning to find time to return to Oni. Over the next few days I will resume my work in poly modding and gradually return to the community. Stay tuned!

• Watching over orphans
• The OBD pages lack a clear explanation of the purpose and use of each file type; probably need to add that at some point

• Puttering away at my ideas for an Oni sequel and an Oni prequel

Other Oni-Related Projects

• Anniversary Edition Tools (Macintosh only) (with EdT)

This is very much a work in progress, and it keeps getting new features. Basically a front-end for command-line tools built by others. Currently allows you avoid the command line while doing the following: installing the Edition, recompiling individual levels to incorporate mods, exporting TXMPs from Oni. Currently working on implementing support for modding TXMPs and 3D models.

• Project Konoko V

Tracing Lorraine's art with a vector app to produce large, clean-lined versions. Currently lives here, but finished pieces are mirrored to the wiki. Somewhat on hiatus at the moment due to my spending most of my free time on other Oni projects.

• Improving textures and 3D models

My main focus lately has been improving the look of the key models (you know, the major characters). Particularly of concern to me was the huge discrepancy between the in-game 3D Griffin and Griffin as illustrated by Lorraine. My comparison of the two Griffins. It's safe to say that the fine art of Lorraine, Oni's character designer, is to be considered more "correct" than the blocky model used in-game. So I'm basically doing two things with him: adding polygons to smooth things out, and altering his facial structure to conform with Lorraine's art (which also requires more polygons). Sample modeling work (about 66% done at the time).

Currently working on:

Importing the HD model for Griffin without an HD texture, to make sure the basic model and UV map work. Once that's ensured, I can swap in a new texture at any point with ease. This is the last technical hurdle. The current problem is that work on Griffin began so long ago that OniSplit had some model exporting issues, which are now a part of the model, so the model is not able to be imported as is. The easiest way to fix this is to export a new model with the latest OniSplit and paste in the new head in place of the old head. After some research, I have learned that, although Blender does not have a copy/paste function, it allows you to append one file to another, so that's how I'll get the new head on the old export onto the newly exported model.

After Griffin is totally done, I plan to move on to either Muro or Konoko. Maybe Shinnie after that.

• Future notions (things I'd like to try some day)
  

- General re-texturing of Oni's environments at higher resolution

- Poly-modding other, less-important characters to make things look consistent

- Scripting new scenarios

- Modeling a new character, animating new moves for them

- Top secret stuff (hint, it involves assembly code)
